The Italy-Japan Workshop on Service Robotics was organized in the framework of the "Italy in Japan 2009" initiative "The art of living and creating", and as a joint activity of the "Summer School in Autumn WSK-TNg 2009" coordinated by: Waseda University, Japan; Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA), Italy; The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Korea; The University of Tsukuba, Japan; Nagoya University, Japan. This workshop followed the long tradition of joint events between Italy and Japan, beginning with the Year of Italy in 2001 with the workshop on "HUMANOIDS - A Techno-Ontological Approach" up to the more recent Italian Spring in 2007 with the symposium on "Robots are already among us!". This year Workshop was chaired by Prof. Cecilia Laschi of SSSA and by Prof. Atsuo Takanishi of Waseda. Several leading researchers from Italy and Japan both in academia and industry kindly accepted to present their point of view on service robotics and its role in current and future society, aiming at creating new collaborative activities in research, industry and services, as well as to motivate young students based on better understanding of state-of-the-art technologies of Italy/EU and Japan. The Panel discussions addressed the "practical issues and problems for the introduction of service robots in everyday life", aiming to propose research topics scientifically interesting and truly feasible, and concrete actions for Italy-Japan collaboration in education, research and industrial development.
